As a local personal trainer in Guildford and Godalming, I’ve worked with hundreds of people just like you. Whether you’re completely new to fitness or coming back after a break, this beginner’s guide will give you the simplest, effective steps to get started on your weight loss journey. Pretty much making it idiot proof!

Setting Realistic and Measurable Goals for Weight Loss

This doesn't have to mean extreme diets and 2-hour-long training sessions. Losing 0.5-1kg per week is a healthy, sustainable pace.

Eat to build muscle and lose fat, not starve yourself lean.

You can't outtrain a bad diet; diet is everything. The surface argument of calories in vs calories out is true when it comes to weight loss/gain, but this needs more context. Eating 2000 calories of sugar and carbohydrates will lead to losing much muscle, metabolism can start slowing down, and then you gain fat again.

So if you don't know where to begin, a key rule is to eat 'foods, not products'. The less processed the better, if you can kill it, pick it or pluck it from land or sea. This will allow you to eat more food, feel more nourished, as there are so many fewer hidden calories and leave you with a healthier gut.

The idiot proof method

Focus on three main components of each meal - protein, vegetables and fruit.

The meat will cover your protein and fats, especially if you vary it. Then you can load up on vegetables (preferably not starchy) and fruits, which will give you enough carbohydrates with fibre and satisfy your sweet tooth. Do this 3 times per day, and this is a simple rule to follow, which will have a massive impact on your physique.

Lastly, build habits, not motivation

Motivation fades; that's why you may need to be coached on building a healthy routine.

  • Weekly workout scheduling (prevents long-term weight gain)

  • Sleep and recovery

  • Stress management (yes, stress affects fat loss!)

  • Increased movement outside the gym (Get your steps ins)

This isn’t just a “6-week shred” — it’s about helping you create sustainable results that last for years.
